My Occasionally Whimsical Graphics Are In No Manner Intended To Delegitimize This. This Is REAL -- And Serious -- Science, Now At NASA.

From time to time, we use Warner Bros. cartoon characters, and 1910s era sci-fi illustrated serials by Edgar Rice Burroughs, as part of our graphics packages, on Mars -- and occasionally, beyond.

But we do whole-heartedly support the underlying science. And we do so, again this Saturday afternoon. We need solid, unbiased looks at all the Navy data -- and all the other data, being accumulated in the cell-phone camera age. We need to look at it with a skeptical eye, and candidly admit. . . when it cannot be explained. And then, as a planet, we ought to discuss at the UN. . . what me might do (if anything). . . if/when it turns out that one or more of these are actually proof of extraterrestrial intelligence, presently visiting us. Here's the latest -- but in truth, I've struggled to frame this in a way that is both playful, encouraging, and not. . . wild-eyed:

. . .[A] new study team [at NASA has been commissioned] to examine unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs). The purpose of the study is to examine UAPs -- observations of events in the sky that cannot be identified as aircraft or known natural phenomena – from a scientific perspective.

Unidentified phenomena in the atmosphere are of interest for both national security and air safety. Establishing which events are natural provides a key first step to identifying or mitigating such phenomena, which aligns with one of NASA’s goals to ensure the safety of aircraft. There is no evidence UAPs are extra-terrestrial in origin. . . .

The team will be led by the preeminent mathematics scientist, at right (not Marvin, BTW). Now you know. . . out, into the sunset, here -- grinning.
