Honestly, the notion that DHS Sec. Nielsen sat before a Congressional Committee this week, and told them bold faced lies. . . about kids being separated at the border, is (for me) unsurprising. It is the Trump M.O. I have come to expect such hackery, from her.
What is more vexing to me, personally, since about October of 2018, is the penchant for Trump-appointed lawyers to repeat these same lies -- in sworn pleadings, in the federal trial courts in Southern and Northern California.
And all the while, children -- some not even a year old -- are being kept from their parents and guardians. . . for months, on end. In many of these cases, in what amount to awful conditions. Here's the latest report (from Wednesday night), and a deeply-troubling bit:
. . . .On February 12, the Steering Committee provided to the government information regarding 22 children who had been in ORR custody for at least five months following the submission of a final reunification election. The government provided detailed information regarding these children on February 16, which the Steering Committee appreciates. Nine of these 22 children had been discharged to a sponsor as of February 14. . . . .
But that means some 11 children are now coming up on six months. . . effectively in isolation, and captivity, for literally no crime at all. American histories of the Presidency will not be kind to 45, on this score. He (through his minions) is committing crimes against humanity, that we as a nation (since the 1950s, minimum) spoke vehemently against, and affirmatively had curbed, at least up until the moment. . . he was elected.
