UNICOM's Purchase Of Former Merck HQ Has Closed: Good News

With over 2 million square feet under roof(s), the complex is being rebranded as the UNICOM Science and Technology Park.

This is very welcome news for the public schools and roads and bridges of the nearby Readington neighborhoods, as it secures the local real estate tax base. [We reported in July 2018 that it had gone under contract to Unicom; now it is closed.] Here's MyCentralJersey.com, on it all:

. . . .With its corporate headquarters in Los Angeles, UNICOM Global is a conglomerate of more than 40 corporations encompassing a wide range of businesses in 12 states and 17 countries. The company has facilities in Plainsboro and Parsippany.

UNICOM, in a press release announcing the purchase, said the facility will be the "cornerstone" of its operations in the Boston-Washington corridor.

UNICOM's purchase of the Merck property, vacant since 2012 when the pharmaceutical company decided to move its headquarters to Summit, came as good news to the Hunterdon County freeholders.

"This is a banner day for economic development in Hunterdon County," Freeholder Director Matt Holt said in a news release. "Having an international company invest in the county sends a strong message about our viability. . . ."

Indeed. Onward -- to a new week. If you are road tripping this long holiday weekend, travel safely.
